Barbells
Barbells are a basic piece of gym equipment you really can't do without. There are two main sorts of bars: 1" and 50mm (Olympic) types. Bars with 50mm diameter collars are 'Olympic'. The simple rule here is that unless you are getting a 1" bar for free, spend the little extra and buy an Olympic bar. You will not regret it. An Olmypic sized bar can cost as little as £70 (or over £1000) What makes Olympic (Oly) bars special? Oly bars have rotating 50mm collars, they rotate so that when you clean or snatch, you don't have to release the bar to move your hand position 180 degrees or force the weights to rotate in the second you have between them leaving the floor and landing. Simply put, the rotating collars have saved an awful lot of broken wrists over the years. Are all Oly bars the same? Oly bars break down into two main types, the first is designed for Olympic lifting, the second is designed for Powerlifting. Oly bars with a 30 - 32mm diameter shaft, are Powerlifting bars (or crap fitness supermarket bars made in China), designed to be strong and not flex much. These will often have a rating (tested to 700lbs for example) and tend to be in the cheaper end of the market because it is easier to build a strong bar with a wide shaft than a strong bar with a narrow shaft. Bars designed for Olympic lifting will have 25 - 28mm shafts, designed to 'whip' (flex under load), this can help a skilled athlete get up from the bottom. These tend to cost more because they have thinner shafts and therefore need to be made from better quality steel, also the shafts are precicely machined down to size. The narrower diameter makes it easier to grip than a Powerlifting bar. The bearings in the collars will tend to be better quality than Powerlifting bars as Powerlifting (deadlift, squat and bench) don't really need rotating bearings. A cheap powerlifting bar is OK to start with, so if that is all you can afford, go for it, and plan on upgrading in a year or so. You'll notice that the cheaper bars have the collars held on with hex bolts. Eventually, with enough dropping (this can be anywhere between the first workout to over a year or two of regular use), the thread will break or the bushings will come out and you'll need to replace it. Bars designed for Olympic lifting can also be used for heavy deadlifts, squats etc.
Buy crap, pay twice:
Recently we talked with a CrossFit affiliate who'd bought a cheap Fitness Supermarket bar and performed 30 x 60Kg Clean and Jerks for time. The bushings fell out of the bar by the end of the 1st workout. Never underestimate how much of a beating your bars will get when they are dropped from overhead every day. If you spend £1000 on cheap bars, you will have to find that £1000 again to replace them within a year. If you buy quality bars that are not guaranteed for life you will need to budget for their replacement E.g. factor depreciation into your budget. If you buy bars that are guaranteed for life you will NEVER have to budget to replace them. If you bend them or the collars fall off, send them back and we send you a new one.
Guaranteed for life = zero depreciation = more money in your pocket in the long run
Mens Olympic bars will have a 28mm shaft and weigh 20Kg, the normal length is 2200mm long Women's Olympic bars will have a 25mm shaft and weigh 15Kg, the normal length is 2200mm long Junior Olympic bars will have a 25mm shaft and weigh 10Kg, usually the same as the women's bar but with shorter collars Children's Olympic bars will have a 25mm shaft and weigh 5Kg, the same as the junior bar but with shorter collars
Better quality bars will come with a lifetime guarantee. We say, buy quality once.
Shipping costs for bars vary, so please email to get an accurate quotation. The system will output a quote based on the weight but will not factor in the excessive length.
